I finished college at the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in Spanish and went to work in garment manufacturing. Several months of hunching over a desk for twelve hours began to take its toll and I sought more Feldenkrais lessons for the relief of neck and back pain. Amazed once again by the simplicity and sophistication of the work as well as the possibility of helping others, I decided to become a Guild Certified Feldenkrais Practitionercm completing the four-year training along with my mom in 1996. Over the past ten years the core of my practice has been helping people recover from chronic pain, stress management, injury prevention and moving into wellness. I currently work independently and in conjunction with physical therapists in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. In addition to the Feldenkrais Method, other certifications include Pilates, Neuro-Linguistics with Hemispheric Integrationtm, and Bones For Life®.
My mom, also known as SuperWoman, stayed at home raising us three kids until I was ten years old when she went to work in real estate. A series of car accidents in the late 80s led to chronic neck, back and shoulder tension. The constant pain caused loss of equilibrium resulting in repetitive broken toes, which didn’t stop her from playing tennis, however she clearly was not on her game.
After a series of Feldenkrais lessons, she began to feel like herself again and continued to thrive in business. When we started the training she was 50 years old and made the decision shift from real estate and go into practice. Our family has been very supportive of us in our continuing education process including worldwide travel for advanced trainings including Bones For Life®.
In 1995, Dixie participated in a research study for Feldenkrais and Adults with Autism (one of her clients wrote and starred in the Academy Award® nominated documentary “Autism Is a World”), some of whom continue to work with her.
At 64 years young, Dixie really enjoys working with anyone who wants to keep up with her, whether it’s hiking the 668 steps of the Eiffel Tower or just jumping around on her pogo stick! My mom says that this method is her secret weapon for going forward into the golden years.
